On October 16th, gifted students from both the middle and high schools had the opportunity to go to the Ritz in Scranton to learn about various skills in the arts. Students had a choice between two different programs within the trip, one focused on visual arts, and the other on performing arts. The performing arts focus gave the students the opportunity to learn from a jazz singer and a play director the art of improvisation, in the context of both music and stage performance.
The visual arts students got to refine their painting skills by painting designs on eggs.
After the instructional time, the participants got to have a cultural lesson and performance from a Ghanaian prince on the role of music in Africa, focusing on the construction of the music, lyrics, and instruments themselves as well as the role of music in communication throughout Africa. We were also givenperformances of the local music.
In conclusion, the Covening was a greatly informative and enriching opportunity for the students in the gifted program lucky enough to go.
