District Champs

On Saturday February 1st, the Wallenpaupack Buckhorns boys wrestling team was crowned the District 2 champions for the first time in school history. A remarkable 20-1 season was capped off with a victorious win over rival Delaware Valley – a wrestling powerhouse.

The Buckhorns’ dominating season put pressure on ‘Paupack to get the job done when it mattered. Along with the pressure the boys were as hungry as ever to capture that first district championship. After three seniors accomplished the 100-win accolade, and coach Krushnowski achieved his 300th win, all that was left to do was win the district as a team.

The match began with a battle at the 149-pound weight class. Wallenpaupack’s Tommy Toth came out strong, but unfortunately lost by decision, putting DV up 4-0 after the first bout. Although that loss would be one of very few, as seniors Xaiden Schock, Conan Kier, and Nick Skokos all won by fall giving the Bucks a big lead. DV did not give up though, as their strong efforts in the heavyweight class gave them a lift with a strong pin. Fortunately for the Buckhorns it was not enough, as Wallenpaupack’s light weights took it home in a dominating fashion. ‘Paupack wins 38-17 in a culminating to a, so far, dominating season.

‘Paupack hosted the PIAA first round matches (match one had Nazareth beating Boiling Springs) on Tuesday and the Buckhorns lost to Nazareth 44-18 in the second match. The Bucks scored first in nine of the 13 bouts but were unable to defeat the Blue Eagles. The final home match of the season, Senior Night, was Wednesday, February 5, and we will have the complete story in our next edition.
