Recycle Your Electronic-Junk

By: Tyler Meyers

The Wayne County YMCA is constantly holding events for the benefit of the community, this time, it’s a recycling event for all kinds of electronics. From typewriters to flatscreen TVs, they are collecting it all and sending it to be turned into new devices instead of letting it pollute the environment. All one must do is load a car with all their broken and/or nonfunctioning electronics and drive to the YMCA. From there they collect a $25 fee, and workers will unload the vehicle and do away with all the clutter. However, if you are donating for a business, school, or a government agency, they ask for pre-registration by calling Tina from the YMCA at 570-253-2083.

However, there are a few caveats to this amazing service they provide. For one, when recycling any appliances that contain Freon, a chemical used for cooling and temperature regulation, (such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, and water coolers) the YMCA asks for an added $20 due to the specialized method of disposal that must be taken.

Another precaution that they set is the requirement that no alkaline or cadmium batteries can be included in what is being recycled. These batteries, when the chemicals inside are released, can be harmful to the body. So, if you do decide to donate, please remove any possible dangers so the YMCA can continue this program in the future!

This event will be held at the Wayne County Fairground from 9 AM to 2 PM, if you have anything that could be recycled, please do consider bringing it to the event for the betterment of the environment.
