On the 11th of November each year, millions of Americans celebrate and honor the American veterans who served in war, this day is recognized as Veterans Day, a federal US holiday. Veterans Day was first known as Armistice Day in 1919 to celebrate the conclusion of World War 1, which ended on November 11th, 2018. Later in 1954, after World War 2 and the Korean War, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day to celebrate Americans who fought and served in any war.

At Wallenpaupack Area High School we have several brave individuals who have served in our US military. These individuals include Sergeant Trent Bryden (United States Marine Corp-7 Years Served), LeAnne DiTaranto (Vetted Registered Nurse United States Marine Corp-2 Years), Dan Gander (Untied States Navy-3 years), Jeffery Jones (Air Force -1 year), Evan Lonergan (E4 Army – 2 years), Shane McConnell (Army – 6 years), Mike Soul (Army- 27 years)

A commonly recognized symbol for Veterans Day is the red poppy. The red poppy became a symbol of remembrance after World War I. The poem “In Flanders Feilds” which described the fallen soldiers who lied beneath poppies and how poppies grew in the fields where soldiers died, popularized the poppy as a symbol for Veterans Day.
