The Poppy War is book one of a trilogy written by Rebecca F. Kuang. Inspired by 20th century Chinese history, The Poppy War follows a war orphan named Rin who discovers she possesses an unearthly power and must master it to save her empire from a looming war. The story follows shamanism gods and beliefs and Rin’s discovery of whom she really is. The story is a military fantasy and contains a lot of dark themes, having graphic detail on war crimes committed.
The Poppy War is enticing, forcing you to never put the book down. Filled with plot twists and surprises, you’ll never know what to expect next. If you’re into training montages and action-packed fight scenes, this book is for you. I’ll never stop recommending this book to anyone.
