Winter Storm Dumps 18 Inches on Greentown, Causes Widespread Closures

By: Jewel Dickerman

This past weekend brought a powerful winter storm to northeastern Pennsylvania and much of the Mid-Atlantic, leaving behind heavy snow, bitter cold, and widespread disruption. In Greentown, local observers reported approximately 18 inches of snow from the storm, turning roads white and piling snowdrifts high in yards and fields.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for the region as the system moved through from late Saturday night into Monday, with totals between 12 and 18 inches expected in our area. Arctic air followed the snowfall, bringing dangerously low wind chills and prompting additional cold weather advisories across northeastern Pennsylvania.

The storm’s reach extended well beyond Pike and Wayne Counties. Across eastern Pennsylvania and into New Jersey, the heavy snow and hazardous travel conditions led to numerous school closures and delays on Monday and into Tuesday including Wallenpaupack Area School District. Districts in the Philadelphia region, among others, announced closures or shifts to virtual learning as road crews worked to clear main routes and neighborhoods.

Residents here and across the region felt the storm’s impact for days — from shoveling and plowing to cautious travel and adjusted plans. While the snow has tapered off, the cold remains, and local forecasts suggest lingering wintry conditions before a gradual moderation in temperatures later this week.
