On April 9, 10, and 11 at 7 p.m. and April 12 at 2 p.m., The WAHS Players will bring to life the musical Into the Woods in the high school auditorium. The production involves 59 WAHS students across the cast, stage crew, and pit band. Students have been rehearsing since January to perform this production.

Plot overview

The musical creates a magical world, bringing together classic fairytale characters who interact in the woods //while pursuing their wishes. The show’s director, Mrs. Hoffmann, describes the first act as “Light-hearted and exciting.” This is where you’ll see the main characters live out their classic fairytale stories, ultimately ending happily, or so they think. Mrs. Hoffmann continued, “The second act has a darker, more serious atmosphere.”

In the second act of the show, you’ll watch the characters realize that getting what you want comes with consequences, while they face a new challenge you have not read in their fairytales before.

Primary Characters

The Baker and the Baker’s Wife are at the center of this story. Their wish is to have a child, but when the Witch tells them she has cursed their family to never have children, they learn the only way to have a child is to gather ingredients for a potion. They must find the cow as white as milk, the cape as red as blood, the hair as yellow as corn, and the slipper as pure as gold within three midnights to appease the witch. On their journey, you’ll also meet the other fairytale characters.

The show follows the Brothers Grimm stories of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Little Red Riding Hood. The musical also includes original characters like the Baker and the Baker’s Wife and the Witch. When all of these characters travel “Into the Woods” to get their wishes, their paths intertwine. Our ensemble will bring to life the magical forest and portray other fairytale characters throughout the show.

After getting to know these characters, you’ll see them take a new journey into the woods in Act II, learning the consequences of their actions.

Overall, this show brings together the magical stories you know and love in a way you’ve never seen them before, bringing forward new lessons and perspectives along with some very challenging and exciting music. From humor to magic and special effects, this show brings something everyone can enjoy!
