This week’s word of the week is Eleutheromania (el-oo-theh-roh-MAY-nee-ah).
Eleutheromania is a noun used to describe the intense, frantic, or obsessive desire for freedom and independence. It contains two Ancient Greek roots; eleutheria and mania. Eleutheria is a rare Greek term for “freedom” or “liberty,” while mania is the Greek suffix for “madness” or “obsession.” Unlike standard words for independence, eleutheromania describes freedom as not only just a political goal, but a psychological obsession in one’s mind.
“Her eleutheromania drove her to leave a restrictive environment and travel the world.”
