As the weather begins to warm up, a specific insect comes out from freshwater environments. These insects are called mayflies; they travel in swarms and have an adult lifespan of 24 hours. These flies do not harm humans, although they can be extremely irritating. The female mayflies have only one purpose; to lay thousands of eggs in water before they die. Mayflies are environmental indicators of healthy, clean water. They also feed on algae in freshwater environments, keeping it from overflowing and keeping the water in good shape. Therefore, next time you feel annoyed by these bugs, remember all the positive impacts they have on our environment.
