The Paupack Press Appreciates Mothers for Mother’s Day

Dear mom,

Thank you for always being strong and always being there for me when I need it. I am so beyond grateful you are in my life and for everything you do for me. I love you so much! — Silvia Cremona

As Mother’s Day approaches, I am reflecting on how thankful I am for my mom’s support. In addition to the countless things that she has done for me; one thing I am grateful for is how she instilled a love of reading in me. When I was little, our family would read together every day. As I got older, she was always helping me find books I would like and sharing some of her favorites with me. Some of our favorites at the time included The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, the Harry Potter series, and The Land of Stories. Now, although I don’t read as much as I used to, almost all my book suggestions come from her. She is a regular reader and audiobook listener and always has the best recommendations. I love talking about books we’ve both read together. To me, reading is a way to see new perspectives, understand others, and at times escape from reality. It has also helped me academically. I am incredibly thankful that reading has been such a big part of my life. — Nora Warner

With Mother’s Day coming up, I want to express how grateful I am to have an amazing woman, full of energy and sometimes attitude, as my mother. Lisa Madrigal has always wanted a daughter, and with her whole family only having sons, the odds did not look promising. But she did not lose hope, and her wishes came true. Even though she was not new to motherhood, having a daughter brought something different. There’s a special connection between mother and daughter, one that is not replicable by a son.

My mom is the true definition of a best friend. She supports me no matter what mess I get myself into. She always believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. And when I couldn’t find a specific piece of clothing I wanted to wear that day, she’d search up and down our already cluttered house for it, even if it meant making herself late to work. Sometimes I stay up at night, thinking about all the sacrifices she makes for me and my brothers, knowing one day I’ll make the same when I’m a mom.

Instead of feeling dread, though, I feel hope. Because even if I can be just a little like her, I know I’ll be the kind of mom a child is lucky to have. We may have our fights, but underneath it all is an unbreakable bond— one between two girls who see each other as their whole world. How lucky am I to be her daughter. — Kiana Madrigal
