Unified Track at Regionals

Wallenpaupack’s Unified Track team competed at the regional championship meet held at Dunmore on Wednesday, May 6, with hopes of qualifying for the state championship. Only the top two teams (out of the seven present) would advance, making the competition especially meaningful. Out of the team’s nearly 30 participants, only 14 were selected to compete because of the limited roster size allowed at regionals and states.

Wallenpaupack started the day strong in the 100-meter dash. In one heat featuring six runners, three were from Wallenpaupack, and they dominated the race by finishing first, second, and third. The team carried that momentum into the distance events. Despite having only a few competitors in the 400-meter and 800-meter races, nearly every runner placed within the top three while also setting new personal records. Success continued in the field events, where many athletes once again achieved personal bests despite the cold and rainy weather.

At the end of the day, Wallenpaupack finished third overall with 74 points, earning bronze medals just like they had during regionals last season. Valley View won the regional title with 80 points, while Wyoming Valley West finished second with 78 points, securing the two state qualifying spots. Although Wallenpaupack qualified for states through a wildcard last year, no wildcard spot was available this season.

Despite narrowly missing states, the team remains proud of their performance and looks forward to finishing the season strong at the league meet held at Wallenpaupack where all the team’s members will be able to compete.
