What would you do if you were the only person standing between humanity and extinction? Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary explores this question through a desperate mission where the fate of the world rests in the hands of a middle school science teacher.
This science fiction book follows Dr. Ryland Grace in his unwitting journey millions of miles from earth. Dr. Grace wakes up alone on a spaceship with no memory of how or why he is there. As he explores the ship, his memory begins to return. He was selected as part of a scientific team to study an organism that was seemingly dimming the sun and every other star in the solar system besides one. By taking part in this study, Grace unknowingly joined a nearly hopeless mission, Project Hail Mary.
Dr. Grace is faced with the option to either sacrifice himself for the good of the world or stay on earth and die alongside everyone else on the doomed planet.
As he is recalling the morbid reason that he ended up on this spaceship, he also must figure out the key to killing the sun-eating organism that is plaguing the solar system. As he continues to uncover the key to eliminating this organism, he quickly figures out that Earth isn’t the only planet that’s dying, and he isn’t the only one out in space searching for an answer.
Project Hail Mary was adapted into a film that premiered March 20, 2026, drawing full theaters and grossing 685.3 million dollars in box offices globally.
Project Hail Mary is a captivating story that explores themes of courage, selflessness, and perseverance. Andy Weir writes in a way that makes complex scientific ideas understandable while also telling the story of an unlikely hero. Dr. Graces journey inspires the readers to look for the hero within themselves and recognize that sometimes all you need is courage, perseverance, and an out of this world sense of humor.
