Maya Walek is a junior member of the marching band. This is her first year as drum major. Outside of being a drum major, she plays the alto and baritone saxophones. When asked about her goals for the season, she says, “It’s my first year serving as drum major, so one of my personal goals has been to really get comfortable in the role. With every performance, I gain more confidence and certainty.” During the field show, you’ll see Maya conducting Cell Block Tango on the podium as well as conducting and playing auxiliary percussion throughout the performance. A fun fact about Maya is that she is bilingual. She speaks both English and Polish. Maya says one of her favorite marching band memories is during her sophomore year when it started to pour during the last game of the season and while everyone was completely soaked, “It ended up being one of the best games I’ve ever gone to.” Maya says the best part of being drum major is conducting on the podium and “watching the band put on such a great show after all the weeks of hard work.” In addition to marching band, Maya is a member of concert, show, chamber choirs, wind ensemble, NHS, FCCLA, and the WAHS Players.
