On Tuesday, October 27, Eileen Miller, mother of a deceased distracted driver, came to the high school to give a presentation about distracted driving. She has been coming in for the last five years to educate sophomores about the dangers of driving and why you should always keep your eyes on the road. Her son, Paul Miller, passed away in a car accident due to a driver reaching for his phone. This incident inspired her to educate kids who are just starting to drive about the dangers of distracted driving. It also was the reason for Paul Miller’s Law, which prevents the use of handheld electronic devices while driving in Pennsylvania, including calling, texting, or having a device up on a dashboard mount. Pennsylvania has joined the other thirty states to pass a similar law. Sara Warner, a sophomore who saw the presentation, said, “The speaker really gave me perspective on what the dangers of distracted driving are. It made me realize that something tragic like what happened to her son could happen to anyone. I will not pick up my phone while driving, even for something as small as a text, because that could change the trajectory of my life and others.” We are so grateful for the opportunity to hear from her real – world experience and are looking forward to listening again next year.
