The ballroom was bursting with emotion and nostalgia Monday night as Dancing with the Stars celebrated its 20th birthday — marking two decades of sequins, spins, and spectacular showmanship. The milestone episode featured returning champions, classic routines reimagined, and plenty of heartfelt moments that reminded fans why the show remains a cultural staple.
Former host Tom Bergeron even returned to the judges’ panel for the first time in years, joining Carrie Ann Inaba, Derek Hough, and Bruno Tonioli in commemorating the show’s long-running success. Each of the remaining seven couples performed two dances: one inspired by a memorable freestyle from a past season, and another in a special relay round alongside former Mirrorball champions.
The competition kicked off with Elaine Hendrix and Alan Bersten, who brought fiery energy to their Season 3-inspired salsa set to “It Takes Two.” Their charisma and clean footwork earned them a strong 36 out of 40.
Social media star Alix Earle and Val Chmerkovskiy followed with a timeless foxtrot to “Singin’ in the Rain,” channeling Old Hollywood elegance and earning praise for Alix’s poise and growth this season.
Dylan Efron and Daniella Karagach impressed with an intense tango to “Ain’t No Sunshine,” showcasing sharp precision and connection.
Olympian Jordan Chiles and Ezra Sosa turned up the heat with a lively cha-cha to Ciara’s “Get Up,” perfectly capturing her athletic energy and rhythm.
Then came one of the night’s standout performances — Robert Irwin and Witney Carson’s emotional foxtrot to “Footprints in the Sand” by Leona Lewis. Dedicated to Robert’s late father, Steve Irwin, the dance moved the audience and judges alike, earning the first perfect 40 of the season.
Meanwhile, Whitney Leavitt and Mark Ballas tackled an intricate Argentine tango that showcased their chemistry and control. Their consistent high scores across the season earned them immunity and an extra two bonus points heading into the relay round.
Closing the individual dances, Andy Richter and Emma Slater brought humor and charm to their quickstep to “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” delighting the audience but falling slightly short on technical precision
In a nostalgic twist, each current contestant was paired with a former Mirrorball champion for a fast-paced relay dance.
- Jordan Chiles joined Apolo Anton Ohno for a spirited quickstep.
- Elaine Hendrix teamed with Rashad Jennings, bringing enthusiasm though falling short of the top marks.
- Dylan Efron partnered with Rumer Willis for a graceful Viennese waltz, winning their relay segment.
- Andy Richter danced with Kaitlyn Bristowe, but the judges noted timing issues.
- Robert Irwin reunited the energy of youth and legacy with Xochitl Gomez for a high-powered jive, also winning their relay.
- Alix Earle performed alongside Joey Graziadei, giving it her all but missing out on the bonus points.
When the glitter settled and the scores were tallied, Andy Richter and Emma Slater became the latest couple to leave the competition. Despite their elimination, the pair exited with smiles and gratitude, thanking fans for their support.
“It’s been an incredible ride,” Richter said. “Getting to be part of this 20-year celebration is something I’ll never forget.”
With the semifinals fast approaching, the competition is tighter than ever. Robert Irwin’s emotional storytelling, Alix Earle’s growing sophistication, and Whitney Leavitt’s technical strength are setting the stage for one of the most unpredictable finishes in years.
The 20th birthday celebration of Dancing with the Stars wasn’t just a look back — it was a reminder of the show’s enduring heart, the stories behind every step, and the way dance continues to bring people together.
