As the fall sports season begins to wind down, postseason play gives teams one final opportunity to compete. Following an impressive regular season, Wallenpaupack’s girls’ varsity field hockey team earned a spot in the Class AA playoffs. The young Buckhorn squad faced two challenging opponents, securing a 4-1 victory in the first round before falling 10-1 in the following matchup.
The Lady Buckhorns opened postseason play at home against Pittston’s Lady Patriots. With their season on the line, Wallenpaupack rose to the occasion, earning a 4-1 victory and advancing to the next round. The win gave the team another opportunity to take the field and extend a season marked by growth and determination.
Their playoff run continued against the Crestwood Lady Comets, the tournament’s top-seeded team, who entered the matchup with an impressive 17-0-1 record. Despite a strong effort, the Buckhorns were unable to overcome the highly ranked Comets, falling 10-1. Sophomore Annie James scored Wallenpaupack’s lone goal, assisted by junior Addison Shiffler, before the loss brought their season to a close.
Although their playoff run came to an end, the team has plenty to be proud of. With a young roster and another season ahead, many players will have the opportunity to continue developing their skills throughout the offseason and build on this year’s accomplishments.
Several Buckhorns also put together notable individual seasons. According to statistics reported by MaxPreps, senior Sophie Fontano finished with eight goals, while senior Alyssa Galasso recorded four assists. Sophomore Kaylee Newcomer was credited with 202 steals, sophomore Carly Wolf tallied 134 saves, and the team’s final record was 6-12. Congratulations to the players and Coach Becky Newcomer on a memorable season!
